10 July – A Zebra Longwing Butterfly uses its proboscis to probe a flower at the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge butterfly garden. 11 July – Tricolored Heron at sunset.
12 July – Female Pileated Woodpecker during a cloudy afternoon at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. 15 July – Male Pileated Woodpecker at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.
16 July – After several years of wild growth my native plants are finally attracting butterflies to the yard, including a number of Zebra Longwings that have established a roost in the little palm hammock right outside my backdoor where they spend the night.  The night roost started with one Zebra Longwing over a month ago and has gradually built up in numbers.  Interestingly, when it rains during the day they also return to this spot to hang out. 17 July – The past and future come together in Exploration Park at Kennedy Space Center during the #ShuttleAtlantis rollover to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Atlantis looms over the SpaceX Dragon capsule and the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle; two vehicles that will soon be taking the US back to low Earth orbit and into deep space respectively.  See more images of the rollover.
18 July – Mockup of the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle in the transfer aisle of the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center.  Orion will one day take astronauts back to the Moon and possibly on to Mars. 19 July – Images from this mornings launch of the #MUOS satellite for the #USNavy aboard a United Launch Alliance #AtlasV.  The launch took place at 9:00AM under very overcast skies from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.  View the MUOS-2 (Atlas V) launch gallery.
21 July – The tail end of the #AtlasV rocket is a fraction of a second away from disappearing into the clouds in this flashback to Friday’s launch of the #MUOS satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.  View the MUOS-2 (Atlas V) launch gallery. 23 July – The Apollo 14 spacecraft “Kitty Hawk” that took Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, and Stuart Roosa to the Moon in 1971 on display at the Saturn V Center at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
24 July – Portrait of a goat. 25 July – A curious Squirrel gets his picture taken.
28 July – More photos of Atlantis from a brief visit to see the Skylab reunion on Saturday. View the Atlantis photos from this visit. 28 July – Photos of the Project Skylab Veterans Reunion where astronauts talked about their experiences with the orbiting laboratory from 40-years ago.  It was another great event hosted by the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
30 July – Sam is already thinking about what he wants to be for Halloween.  One of his ideas is to go as one of Dracula’s Hellhounds.  (Sam with Christopher Lee in Dracula: Prince of Darkness by Hammer Films, 1966.) 31 July – Great Blue Heron coming in for a landing.
1 August – Sandhill Cranes at sunset. 5 August – Formerly wild burros from the West in safe retirement after their adoption to a ranch in Florida.
6 August – Sam ascending the ORCA observation platform during a hike early this morning before it got too hot. 7 August – I have spent a good part of the summer doing video projects for the office.  Finally, here is one available for public viewing.  This is a highlight video from a much longer version that details the Square Foot Gardening project Pelican Island Audubon has instituted in schools throughout Indian River County over the past year as part of a Together Green grant from Toyota and National Audubon.  It is amazing how enthusiastic the kids are and what great success they have had with gardening so far!
