A commercial Atlas V rocket launches Intelsat 14, a telecommunications satellite, into orbit at 1:55 a.m. on 23 November 2009 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The photograph was set up to be a three to four minute time exposure of the rocket’s flight across the sky but the sudden appearance of blanketing clouds meant only a few seconds at the very beginning of the rocket’s launch was actually recorded as seen in the detail above.
