Note the robotic arm, or Remote Manipulator System (RMS) supplied by Canada for the Shuttle Program, jutting out of the Payload Bay.
Closely stitched thermal blankets cover areas of Atlantis not exposed to high heating on reentry.
Note the dish antenna deployed from the Payload Bay visible here sticking up over the cockpit. The antenna maintained a link with the Tracking & Data Relay Satellites in a higher orbit than Atlantis to provide almost constant communication with the ground.
The device in the Payload Bay is a mockup of the system used to dock with the International Space Station.
Once docked with the ISS, the docking adapter provided a two-way tunnel for astronauts to go back and forth between the ISS and the Shuttle.
The side hatch on the Mid Deck provides access to the crew compartment while on the ground.
A view looking forward. The inside of each Payload Bay door supports four radiator panels to radiate heat while Atlantis is in space.
A close-up of the United States flag on the rear bulkhead of the Payload Bay.
