Underneath Discovery looking forward. The open doors reveal umbilical cavities where liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen from the External Tank would flow into Discovery to feed the Main Engines. Each of the main fuel feedlines, the round gold colored cap seals the line seen better in the image below, is 17 inches across. During an average launch, approximately 16,800 gallons a minute of liquid oxygen and approximately 45, 283 gallons a minute of liquid hydrogen would flow through these lines into the Main Engines. The doors are closed and sealed after External Tank separation.
