The space shuttle Columbia lifts off at 10:39 a.m. on mission STS-107 on 16 January 2003. Columbia carries Spacehab,a sort of space laboratory, in its cargo bay along with the first Israeli astronaut. The first three images above show the roll maneuver the shuttle undertakes right after leaving the pad for a heads-down flight into orbit while the fourth image shows the exhaust cloud drifting away to the north. UPDATE: 1 February 2003 High altitude breakup of the shuttle Columbia over Texas on reentry results in loss of crew and vehicle.
