Mars or Bust! It’s a GO on the third try after two days of scrubs due to bad weather for this Delta 2 rocket launching the Mars Exploration Rover-A (MER-A), nicknamed “Spirit,” towards the planet Mars at 1:58 p.m. from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on 10 June 2003. If all goes well, the rover should be landing on the Martian surface in January, 2004. It’s twin, MER-B, nicknamed “Opportunity,” will be launched later in the month. UPDATE: 3 January 2004 Spirit Rover Lands on Mars. NASA's Deep Space Network has received a signal confirming that Mars Exploration Rover Spirit is alive after rolling to a stop on the surface of Mars. (9:00 pm PST)
