A Delta 2 rocket lifts off carrying an upgraded Global Positioning Satellite (GPS 2R-18) into orbit from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 3:04 p.m. on 20 December 2007. The launch was delayed five minutes to allow another object in orbit to pass overhead to avoid a collision. Inset shows jettison of the ground-lit solid rocket boosters.
