Observations & Images
22 July 2006
North Nest/South Nest

North Nest

The oppressive heat and humidity interspersed with the occasional thunderstorm accompanied by scary lightning makes for a miserable time at the Refuge during the dog days of summer for the Ospreys, me, and, presumably, all the other wildlife---except for the myriad of insects which seem to thrive under these conditions. When I arrived at the north nest at dawn the Ospreys were nowhere to be seen.

South Nest

Off in the distance, the south nest Ospreys could be seen so I hiked over to their nest but, before I could reach it, they flew off over the Indian River Lagoon. I sat for a couple of hours waiting for them to return but they did not. Looking back at the north nest I could see those Ospreys had returned so I trekked back only to have them leave before I got there. Looking back at the south nest I could see those Ospreys had returned but, at that point, the threat of rain called off this game of Osprey tag.

THE NEIGHBORS

A Common Ground-Dove is touched by the first light of the rising sun.
An Orchard Spider has weaved a web across the trail.
A Dragonfly at rest.
A Queen Butterfly at rest.
A Wood Stork passes the south Osprey nest.
